Creating a Permaculture FOOD FOREST - April 17th, Musselburgh, Dunedin. Proud to be part of the 2025 WILD DUNEDIN FESTIVAL - Ōtepoti Dunedin Rocks!
1.00 - 5.00 PM
In this session we dive into the world of multi-layered, regenerative, beautiful FOOD FORESTS! We will begin with some theory - introducing and playing with the philosophy, ethics and principals of Permaculture - to get a feel for what Permaculture is: an innovative design framework for designing resilient human-scale systems in harmony with nature - the scope of which is limited only by your imagination!
We will then take ACTION (‘cos that’s what Permaculture is all about!), preparing a new zone for planting our Food Forest, adjacent to the existing permaculture garden. We will build a large no-dig bed, using soil nurturing, biodegradable mulches. Then we will plant fruit trees, berries, and bio accumulators, and sow with hardy companion plants which will initiate the multi-layered, diverse understorey of productive and beneficial plants - known as ‘guilds’ - in our Food Forest.
The goal of this hands-on practical is to enable you to immediately apply Permaculture Principals at your home, school, or workplace - building resilience in your own existing orchard system or establishing a Food Forest from scratch.
You will start to see the results of your planting by spring: an increase in soil depth, earthworm activity and overall soil health, and above ground abundance of diverse flowers and beneficial insects, and of course delicious harvests for your plate!
This Workshop is proudly presented as part of the 2025 WILD DUNEDIN FESTIVAL - Ōtepoti Dunedin Rocks!
The Wild Dunedin Festival of Nature opens on Thursday 10th April and runs until 22nd April.

HEALTHIER FOR US AND OUR BEAUTIFUL LIVING SOIL
The layered organic materials offer an abundance of food for microbes to work on, and to release nutrients for plant growth, whilst also offering warmth, moisture and aeration for root growth PLUS fantastic weed control. As this method requires NO DIGGING, soil health is greatly improved, and it is also excellent for human health - no dig means no back pain!
PERMACULTURE ETHIC - EARTH CARE
Embrace and provide for all life forms, and enhance natural resource health by creating diverse and regenerative food systems.
PERMACULTURE PRINCIPAL - OBTAIN A YIELD
